Kraus Building Awarded LEED Gold

Ballinger’s Kraus Building Renovation project at the University of Michigan was recently certified Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The School of Kinesiology Building renovation and addition project has earned LEED Gold building certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in recognition of sustainability efforts.

The building, originally constructed in 1915 and formerly called the Edward Henry Kraus Building, includes research labs, a vivarium, classrooms, faculty offices and common space.

The renovation and addition include a number of features that will lead to a predicted energy cost savings of 41 percent, as compared with a code-compliant building per 2007 guidelines from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

Energy-saving facets include:

  • New, well-insulated windows and doors at all exterior locations to provide improved thermal performance. The replacement assemblies have been tested in place to ensure minimal air infiltration.
  • A skylight in a new atrium area to bring natural light deep into the building. Advanced lighting controls, such as daylight dimming, also conserve energy.
  • LED lighting with occupancy sensors throughout the building. Historic fixtures at entrances were retrofitted with LED lamps.

The building also features low-flow plumbing fixtures and automatic sensor faucets, which are predicted to reduce water use by 34 percent compared to Michigan Plumbing Code standards. It also boasts close proximity to basic services and bus transportation.

The project included a 62,700-square-foot infill addition, featuring a three-story atrium and the aforementioned skylight. The addition enclosed the building’s courtyard, thereby reducing the climate cost of using new building materials.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. It recognizes sustainability efforts to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings on one of four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The School of Kinesiology Building renovation and addition earned 62 points from the U.S. Green Business Council, out of 110 possible.

Since 2005, when U-M first received “green building” certifications, 18 projects have earned LEED designations. All new U-M buildings and additions with an estimated construction budget greater than $10 million are required to achieve at least LEED Silver certification.

Kraus Transformation Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking celebration for the University of Michigan’s Edward Henry Kraus Building Transformation, designed and engineered by Ballinger, took place on Friday.

Members of the campus community broke ground Friday on an addition to the 101-year-old Edward Henry Kraus Building, which will enable the School of Kinesiology to consolidate its programs and operations in one location beginning in the fall of 2020.

The $120 million project calls for a deep renovation of the existing 183,000-square-foot building, plus a 62,000-square-foot infill addition within an exterior courtyard.

Completed in 1915, the Kraus Building had housed the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as well as the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Both of those departments have relocated to the new Biological Science Building, which opened this fall.

Tradeline Features UM’s Taubman Health Sciences Library

Tradeline recently published a report entitled, “Transformation to Exclusively Digital Library Frees Up Space for UMichigan Medical School,” highlighting Ballinger’s design for the A. Alfred Taubman Health Sciences Library at the University of Michigan. The report describes how this 137,000SF addition and renovation of the Medical School was originally conceived as an update to the library’s sixth floor lounge before student feedback convinced the school of the need to modernize the entire facility.

Ballinger’s Team, led by Principal Todd Drake, collaborated with the school as they renovated their curriculum in tandem with the building design process. The result is a state-of-the art completely digital library and study space that embraces the future of medical scholarship. With the University’s print collection now located off-site, the design team had the flexibility to maximize active clinical learning spaces and provide well-lit and comfortable spaces for quiet study and relaxation.

Ballinger Connects Alumni During AIA Convention

During this year’s AIA Convention, Ballinger was pleased to host alumni groups from the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

Alumni from the two universities were invited to Ballinger’s studio for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to reconnect with classmates. In addition to providing a respite from the convention, the reception included an exhibit illustrating Ballinger’s history of innovation.

Ballinger has had the privilege to design projects on the campuses of both universities, including the Taubman Health Sciences Library at the University of Michigan and Clark Hall at the University of Maryland.

University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library Achieves LEED Gold

On February 22, 2016, the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman Health Sciences Library achieved LEED Gold Status.

The new library contains simulation suites, classrooms, collaboration labs, and study areas. Ballinger led the Medical School through a comprehensive project formation and benchmarking effort to determine the most effective design for a 21st century library space. The resulting 137,000-square-foot addition and renovation transformed the building into a light-filled, flexible facility that promotes collaboration and hands-on learning. In addition to programming, Ballinger served as the design architect and worked closely with local architect of record TMP Architecture.

Ballinger’s design rejuvenated the building by replacing the windowless brick walls with nearly 18,000 square feet of low-e glass. Double-height, naturally-lit lounges create an open, transparent environment.

Student and faculty can choose from a wide variety of flexible study and meeting space.   A new café and lounge welcome students and encourage spontaneous inter-disciplinary collaboration. Students hone their skills in THSL’s 30 realistic patient care rooms and by using the Anatomage Table, a life-sized interactive visualization system for anatomy education.

Tradeline Features Ballinger’s Workplace Strategy Team

Ballinger’s Workplace Strategy team was recently featured in a Tradeline report entitled, “Culture Drives Collaboration; Space Design Enhances It.” The article focuses on Ballinger principal, Keith Mock, AIA and Ballinger designer, Katherine Ahrens, LEED AP, and how they combine an understanding of a client’s office culture with a library of industry metrics and research on space utilization to arrive at a tailored workplace strategy and design.

The report presents a number of case studies across a range of industries. In the case of the University of Wisconsin’s Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, the University’s desire for a strong sense of community inspired a design that combines lab modules, open collaborative areas, and amenities such as shops and restaurants to promote formal and informal learning.

At a Boeing helicopter factory in Pennsylvania, Ballinger’s Workplace Strategy team was tasked with reorganizing the space to integrate engineers into the factory to optimize collaboration while allowing for sufficient space for focused work.

For Merck’s New Jersey headquarters, Ballinger engaged in a year-long research project that included a 27,000 SF pilot workspace to create a custom solution that reflected the Merck culture and work style.
