A. James Clark Hall featured in Context

Ballinger’s A. James Clark Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park was featured in the spring issue of Context, a quarterly magazine published by the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA.

The 184,000 SF Clark Hall facilitates world class learning and discovery by bringing together students and faculty across the spectrum of engineering disciplines into a vibrant innovation environment. A “working commons” promotes student team-based collaboration, and flexible, transparent research laboratories enable world class convergent bioengineering research. In addition to active learning classrooms and dynamic laboratory environments, the inclusion of the Leidos Innovation Lab and Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices results in a unique co-mingling of education and entrepreneurship that facilitates the transition of research from the lab to the marketplace.

Ballinger Presents Environments for Next-Generation Engineering Innovation

Ballinger principals Craig S. Spangler, AIA and Jonathan Friedan, PE, LEEP presented “Environments for Next-Generation Engineering Innovation” at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference.

Engineering has increasingly become central to convergent scholarship for solving societal challenges and fostering student creativity and entrepreneurship, which demand profound transformations in engineering teaching and research environments. In the session held at the University of Maryland in College Park, Craig and Jonathon overviewed Ballinger’s transformational academic facilities plan and the recently opened A. James Clark Hall for the University’s A. James Clark School of Engineering.

Craig and Jonathan coached attendees on how to plan effective processes for campus district transformations and to qualitatively evaluate the effectiveness of facilities for next-generation engineering learning and discovery.

SCUP is a community of higher education leaders responsible for the integration of planning on their campuses and for the professionals who support them. Their 5000+ members represent the areas of planning, finance, administration, research, and IT who are charged with planning for the future of colleges and universities and the success of students.

Ballinger Leads Tour of A. James Clark Hall at University of Maryland, College Park

Ballinger led a tour of the A. James Clark Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park as part of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. The tour was led by Ballinger’s principal-in-charge Craig Spangler, AIA, engineering principal Jonathan Friedan, PE, LEED AP, project architect Nicholas Hollot, AIA, LEED AP, mechanical engineer Bradford Crowley, PE, LEED AP and University of Maryland’s deputy director of operations and maintenance Rob Hermstein.

A. James Clark Hall awarded LEED Gold

A. James Clark Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park was awarded LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The 184,000 GSF, six-floor engineering building is home to high-performance laboratory, instructional, and maker spaces. An open plan environment provides an abundance of natural light and is paired with a robust building envelope and high efficiency mechanical systems. These systems are exposed and composed throughout the building to inspire students, including a transparent two-story chiller plant that serves as didactic engagement for engineering students passing by the building. Energy wheels, passive solar shading, high efficiency chillers, displacement ventilation and 100% storm water management are among the sustainable features that contributed to LEED Gold Certification.

Ballinger’s A. James Clark Hall wins AIA Pennsylvania Award

A. James Clark Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park received an Honor Award at the 2018 AIA Pennsylvania Design Awards Program. The Architectural Excellence Design Awards Program celebrates exceptional design from firms and individuals across the State. These awards honor excellence in design and innovation, contributions to the profession of architecture, and commitment to the quality of the built environment.

A. James Clark Hall is the flagship building for the A. James Clark School of Engineering and is a vibrant contributor to the College Park campus. Its ground floor is home to a “working commons” student innovation lab, a highly-flexible student team-based makerspace for both small and large projects. Upper floors feature flexible loft labs to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across a wide variety of research modalities. Abundant transparency contributes to a vibrant, diurnal environment for inspiring discovery.

The 2018 jury was based in Chicago and included Carol Ross Barney, FAIA of Ross Barney Architects, Martin Felsen, FAIA of UrbanLab, and Casey Jones of Perkins + Will. Clark Hall’s innovation lab “created a technical yet transparent environment for learning that captured our imagination,” they reported about the project. “The ‘working commons’ stole the show.”

Ballinger presents A. James Clark to architecture students

Ballinger senior associate Nicholas Hollot, AIA, LEED AP gave a lecture and tour to students at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He presented an overview of A. James Clark Hall, the new bioengineering building on the University of Maryland College Park campus, and led a tour through the building.

Ballinger designed the 184,000 SF state-of-the-art facility and provided architecture and engineering services. It opened in the fall of 2017 and is home to the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices and Leidos Innovation Lab.

Tradeline Report: Convergence Drives New Approaches to Strategic Planning

Tradeline published a report featuring Ballinger’s design for a new engineering teaching and research building at the University of Maryland, College Park. Designed to facilitate the practical integration of bioscience, medicine and engineering, the building will serve as a national center for innovation.

The report is based on presentations at Tradeline’s College and University Science Facilities 2014 conference, given by Ballinger principal Craig S. Spangler; lab planner Jeffrey Schantz; Founding Chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, Bill Bentley; and Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, Darryll Pines.

Ballinger Explores Convergent Environments at Tradeline Conference

Ballinger principal Craig S. Spangler, along with lab planner Jeffrey Schantz and Bill Bentley, Founding Chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, presented a case study at the Tradeline College and University Science Facilities 2014 conference. Their talk, titled “Bioengineering and Convergence Science at the University of Maryland,” described the cultural evolution of research themes and planning metrics, and how they’re embodied at A. James Clark Hall, a new engineering building at the University of Maryland, College Park.
