Shore Medical Center | Surgical Pavilion

The 140,000 SF surgical pavilion expansion developed by Scarborough Properties provides four floors dedicated to surgical services, cardiology, oncology and endoscopy services and improved patient amenities.
Located on the site of a former parking lot, the expansion provides an important connection to existing facilities, and combines with a medical office building and parking garage to establish a campus-like development for this Jersey Shore hospital.
The interior of the surgical pavilion reflects the landscape of the surrounding beach community and uses transparency to connect occupants to nature. The design is organized into three layered components: a public realm consisting of the lobby and amenities on the outer layer; the semi-public patient waiting areas in the middle; and the clinical spaces dominated by surgical suites which are above and internal to the other components. The materials used for the public and semi-public components were chosen to emulate the stress-relieving atmosphere the beach evokes. Layers of transparent and translucent glazing are employed to distinguish between open, public areas and more private patient waiting areas. The lobby’s warm wood accents and terrazzo flooring in sand tones mix with abundant natural light to provide a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.
