NYU Langone Medical Center | Ambulatory Care Center

The NYU Langone Medical Center Ambulatory Care Center project transformed an inward-focused 50-year-old telecommunications office building into a vibrant new center for outpatient care.

The 15 floors acquired by NYU Langone of the 24-story building have been fully renovated for outpatient use, and are served by modernized and expanded building infrastructure located on three common equipment floors. Ballinger was responsible for the planning, design and engineering of the renovation.

Constructed in 1967, the original building had minimal public presence, and public access to the ground floor had been discontinued. The renovation of the ground floor and adjacent North and South Plazas created an open and welcoming arrival sequence. Off-street vehicular queuing at the north is visually connected to interior lobby waiting and amenity areas. The lobby and café look out to reimagined outdoor public space to the south.

Ballinger created light-filled open spaces for both staff and patients that meet project design objectives and fulfill clinical program requirements. The consistent treatment of arrival and waiting spaces on each of the clinical floors has enhanced wayfinding and, along with the use of a common materials palette, has established a successful NYU Langone brand identity.

The Ambulatory Care Center offers medical specialties including pre-admission testing, dermatology, endoscopy, gastroenterology, pain management, neurology, and ear, nose, and throat. It’s also home to Rusk Rehabilitation, one of the country’s top rehabilitation programs.

This project provides a new model for the modern workplace, inspired by the Scrum Guide’s three pillars for teams: transparency, inspection, and adaptation. As team rooms replace individual work seats to support multi-disciplinary collaboration, it ultimately redefines what it means to “go to work” #challengethechallenge
