Barnes Foundation | Art Education Building

Working with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, Ballinger was the associate architect for the Barnes Foundation’s Art Education Building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

The two-story, 93,000 SF building, with an additional level below grade, houses the Foundation’s noteworthy art collection displayed in 12,000 SF of exhibition space that replicates the scale, proportion and configuration of the original galleries in Merion, Pennsylvania. The galleries include a classroom on each floor to facilitate teaching, as well as an internal garden. The building also includes a 150-seat auditorium, a café with a courtyard for outdoor dining, and a gift shop. The building achieved LEED Platinum certification.
