Ballinger was recognized by the Structural Engineers Association of Pennsylvania (SEAoP), formerly DVASE, with a Merit Award for Calder Gardens. The award was presented on May 6th at the Down Town Club in Philadelphia.
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, Calder Gardens represents a significant addition to Philadelphia’s cultural landscape on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Conceived not as a traditional museum, but as an immersive experience, the project guides visitors from the energy of the street through a sequence of gardens into a contemplative, below-grade environment. The facility includes a series of distinct gallery spaces, a multipurpose event space, offices, and a gift shop, with an exterior plaza structured to support public gatherings and events.
Ballinger served as Architect of Record and Structural Engineer of Record, collaborating with Guy Nordenson and Associates, who provided schematic design and design development structural concepts as Associate Engineer.
The project reflects a shared commitment among the design and construction teams to create a lasting cultural destination dedicated to the work of Alexander Calder. As the final undeveloped site along the Parkway, its completion marks the culmination of longstanding efforts to establish a permanent home for Calder’s sculptures, stabiles, and works on paper in his hometown.
